is it appropriate for the United States to tell other countries not to have nukes, whilst the US keeps its nukes and is the only country to have used it against another country ?

The US thinks it is. :o)

If one poured over the language of the NPT it addresses more than just non-proliferation it also addresses the requirement for the old nuclear club to disarm. Reasonable arguments have been put forward that the nucear club, the US, France, England, China and Russia... are in violation of the NPT by not making substantial progress towards disarming. But as is often the case with international treaty, who is going to make them disarm? I would expect that any UN action to enforce the provisions would be within the context of the UN Security Council and you can bet big money that all five vetoes used.

Is it inappropriate, is it hypocritical? Sure. Who is going to do anything about it? In practice, it's appropriate because we have no choice.

Yes, because the US will use and has used nuclear weapons under the severest provocation and saved a bunch of lives in doing so. There is no assurance that third world countries will do likewise.

Of course not! It's completely hypocritical and serves no interest but OURS. It's objectively and morally WRONG, and long term stupid.

But, it IS our policy.

Before the Bush admin. we WERE working hard to reduce nuclear weapons, in a bipartisan manner, through administrations of both parties. At the height of the Cold War, we and the Soviets had over 35,000 warheads each. Thanks to those efforts, the number NOW is less than 10,000 each.

"Pre-emptive" invasions don't set a good mood for non-proliferation.
