I recall that the US giving Afghan fighters effective surface to air missiles tipped the balance decisively against the Soviet Union when they were fighting in Afghanistan during the 1980s.

Wonder if they or a proxy are now returning the favor by supplying such weapons to Iraqi insurgents for use against US aircraft.
