For the most part I agree with you. I understand your frustration. However, I think that you should reconsider your decision to stay away from SI. SI, like many things in life, cannot be changed to be exactly what you would like it to be. Just as it is in life however, it can be persuaded to change for the better over time if you are willing to stick around & present your case persuasively. FWIW, I do look at bans a little differently than you, but I understand where you're coming from. I look at the threads on SI more as gathering places for folks to discuss things. Each gathering place is different. - Some threads are wide open to any topic whatsoever. - Some are open to many topics with some restrictions so that folks who gather there know that the discussions will mostly be on topic & mostly within established guidelines. - Some threads are very topic specific with a varying range of restrictions - some just asking to stay on topic - some with varying restrictions on what type of conduct is acceptable. Folks who create these types of threads & those who gather there expect a higher degree of adherence to established guidelines. They find this quite acceptable because, like you, they value their time & they don't want to waste their time with folks who do not want any restrictions placed on their speech no matter what. Sadly, folks like that can be quite disruptive & cause the thread to get quite off topic for extended periods. They can also be quite rude, again with the same disruptive results. Threads like this mostly make judicious use of the ban button, often using it to temporarily suspend disruptive elements who refuse to abide by established guidelines that everyone else has agreed are quite acceptable. - And then there are some threads that only want like minded sheeple to gather in a groupthink collective. It's threads like this that abuse the ban button. They force everyone to fall into line with the moderator's POV or be banished. As you have found, this type of thread almost always is on the fringe & they tend to mostly be leftists. They may claim to be one thing ("centrist", etc), but they are almost always is something altogether different. They may claim they are open, honest, accurate, compassionate & inclusive, but they almost always turn out to be the exact opposite of all the things they so deeply believe they are. To most folks these threads defy reality to the point of exasperation. As you can see, threads like this exist so folks can gather here & point out the hypocrisy, extremism, calumny & reality defying claptrap that groupthink threads can be. So why not stick around, even if it's less than in the past. Vent your spleen about the faux "centrist" thread when they do or say something that boggles the mind.
