No such extensive study is needed, no more than I would have to be an expert on the atmosphere or the oceans to know that the daytime sky isn't blue from reflection of blue oceans.

I would have to be an expert on the history of the Ford Motor Company, and of labor economics of the period to conclusively say if Ford was correct that paying a lot more than his competitors helped him grow his company. Since I'm not such an expert, and the claim is at least plausible, I'd defer to his statement that it did. But his claimed mechanism, isn't reasonable.
