"In many cases they were blocked from assimilation by the Arab states, up to literally being forced in to the camps by the Arab states. Israel not letting them back in to Israel wasn't the act that forced them in to the camps."

Really? Why then do the Arabs keep wanting Right of Return?

I'll answer your question, but first I'll state it doesn't make a lot of sense as a response to your quote from my statement. The behavior of the Arabs that I noted would only increase the desire for "a right of return".

Why do they argue for a right of return?

1 - Its the official position of the Palestinian leadership. Many Palestinians fall in line with the leadership on this one.

2 - Some Palestinians hope to get land, others figure they can at least get money out of it. Drop the demand and no land or money will be forthcoming.

3 - Some Palestinian terrorists or would be terrorist would like to return in order to kill Israelis.

4 - Some would like to return hoping to eventually make Israel in to something other than Israel. If they can become the majority, perhaps they can get a Palestinian state by destroying the Israeli state without ever defeating its military.

5 - For the more moderate Palestinians - They wouldn't give up the demand without getting something in return. It becomes a card they would hope to trade for quite a lot.

6 - More radical Palestinians may hold the idea of the right of return as a way to sabotage any settlement, as they (at least the more knowledgeable among them) know that Israel isn't going to allow it.
