Loyalty to tribe, religion, race, national origin, extreme liberal chaos, extreme oppressive totalitarianism, etc. can lead to a false sense of devotion to the banners of one group identity or another. This is true. Concerted and near-overwhelming assault by the forces of evil can also lead to a quite reasonable sense of devotion to banners. We sometimes miss that feeling of righteousness, I think, and we sometimes go to quite exorbitant lengths to try to retain it. It doesn't always help.
