Well, yes... but these things are often clearer with hindsight. WW2 conditioned a generation of Americans to see things in absolute black and white terms, and sent them into a world where shades of grey were the order of the day. That caused problems, but was it anyone's specific fault? I sometimes find it hard to blame people for being products of their times.

There are so many examples.... I don't doubt at all that the struggle against Communism was worthy and necessary, but was the overthrow of Mossadegh a necessary part of that struggle or a favor to the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company? Did our support for a Marcos or a Somoza help fight Communism, or help advance it?

All questions that seem clearer in hindsight, but still worth considering, if there are lessons to be learned...
