If America withdrew tomorrow, South Korea would have to spend a tremendous amount of defense money to make up for it.

You might ask, "Well ... why should South Korea even bother to make it up?" Ask President Roh Moo-Hyun, who was elected on an anti-American stance, yet still had to curry favor with America (and piss off his constituents in the process). Even the liberal politicians there are governed by reality.
