I agree. Taxing gasoline is too obvious and will draw too many opponents, but if we institute subtler taxes throughout the oil consuming value chain, then that might be more tolerable because it is hidden.

I was thinking that one way to benefit the US oil companies while simultaneously making progress towards the goal of oil independence is to slap 30-50% tarriffs on imported oil. Then those tarriff revenues could be used to fund alternative energy R&D, alt energy tax credits, etc. That way domestic oil producers aren't penalized, but we drive up the price of oil anyway, which will keep gasoline prices high.
