Thomas Barnett, a military analyst, proposes dividing the Department of Defense into two sections: one to fight big wars and one for insurgencies and nation-building.

Barnett has it right and we already have both forces.

I agree with his proposal to divide the forces. The problem we have is the big war army thinks they know how to use COIN forces, but they don't. The result is our unconventional warfare experts are being wasted at a time when their expertise is most needed.

Creating separate commands is an elegant solution. Those leaders who comprehend this have advocated a separate command structure for SF for decades. We may need to create another service - similar to the Coast Guard - to get our UW Forces the autonomy they need to be effective.
