I watched that movie twice this past week on AMC. The host mentioned that if you see Costner grimace now and then, it's because his appendix ruptured during filming.

Just watched "Open Range".

Pretty tough to replace The Duke, but Duvall is working on it.

Costner is pretty cool, too.

I've seen Open Range about a dozen times, four of them in a theater. It's one of my favorite movies, second to Lonesome Dove, also a Duvall film.

Normally I do not care for Costner's movies, but this one was almost perfect. The DVD, which I own, shows how they made it. It gave me great respect for the filmmaker's art.

Costner suffered appendicitis while filming. The pain he was experiencing actually lent realism to the drama, I thought. He was quite ill, and was hospitalized just after.

I noticed two flaws in the editing. One was a scene on a river. In one shot there were a dozen cows on the slope behind. Next shot at the same angle, but in movie time just seconds, no cows.

The other was during the gun fight. Costner was reloading his pistol, which was a Colt Single Action Peacemaker. He shook the fired casings out of the cylinder instead of using the ejector rod. In real life they would not shake out so easily, if at all.
