Russia's renewal of its large defense spending, its efforts to "stretch" its borders economically and politically, its attempt to present itself as the leader of a group of so-called non-alligned nations united to slow American hegemony, its willingness to be brazen in its diplomatic initiatives, all smack of a nation that is attempting to reshape itself as a great power, but one that claims to have learned from its past sins.

And its ability to build alliances this time around won't be based on the inevitable march of world communism but on shared interests....in some ways scarier and certainly more difficult for America to rail against..after all, we do the same thing IN OUR INTERESTS.

>>The Cold War has not returned, but Russia is now officially asserting itself as a great power, and behaving accordingly.<<

As expected, President Putin was criticized quite harshly by US and western commentators. He was even accused by US Defense Secretary Gates of starting another Cold War!

>>He said: "One state, the United States, has overstepped its national borders in every way"...

All Putin has done is to point to the plain geo-strategic fact that Russia has pulled all its armed forces back inside its own borders and that the US should do the same.

Thanks to President Putin, the real issue is right out in the open. In the past two weeks, public and peaceful demonstrations against US bases have taken place in Italy, Spain and Greece.
