The societal cost of prosecuting drug users is the only side of the equation I'm interested in balancing. Costs are the variables in which we need to agree. Otherwise there is no equation and no objectivity in which to start.

In Minneapolis it was decided that the societal cost of smoking in public places outweighed the rights of the individual. I couldn't be more delighted. Although I secretly "knew" that property rights should have trumped societal cost I argued that smoking in bars and restaurants was equivalent to assault, such as spitting in ones face. Assault is illegal and harmful to society "I cried" ...and we won the proposition.
