Actually I think you have that backward. The main interest in this story has been due to the boy's possible ethic and religious influences. I live very close to Columbine High School, so I've been drenched in the coverage of that event for years, and it just occurred to me that I don't know the backgrounds of Harris and Kleabold (The shooters), nor would it mean anything to me if I did. There have been other teen rampages since, that got short lived media coverage, and no interest was paid to their cultural heritage. This one will probably get more milage.

bet u a buck that if a non-muslim killed 5 people, it would be called a crime. If a muslim did the same thing, its called an act of terrorism.

I don't see any of that old kind of religious referencing anymore.

What you see now are references like "Jewish extremeist" or "Muslim Extremist", etc. Religious affiliations are presented within a political context.

Usually the religion and race, etc. are buried somewhere in the text. Headlines used to say things like 'Black gunmen shoots up gas station." Now the black part is usually dropped, I think.

Eric Rudolph is a name we all know and he is publicly identified as a far right Christian terrorist. His religious background wasn't covered up by the press for PC reasons.

We all know what the Christian Identity movement is and that members of that cult have committed acts of terror. Again no coverup of their "Christian" background.

The killings by members of the racist World Church of the Creator in Illinois also made the national news.

We all know Fred Phelps name and know of the "Westboro Baptist Church" and they are held out as representative of Christianity by many.
