Dear Tench:

Hypocrisy doesn't have a statute of limitations, especially one as short as a few years.

So if your best friends just tried to kill you, you are not allowed to change your opinion of them. People change as new experiences happen. Are you stating that your opinions haven't changed over time? That a nice man down the street whom you liked turns out to be a serial killer of gay boys and you would be a character witness in his behalf. Get real!

Opinions change over time. And as new information comes to light. And as the situation changes. For example, you opinion on school tax levels changed from when you didn't have school aged children and when you did. And they were different when you went to school and when you no longer go, but pay for it.

Since your opinions have changed over time, then your hypocrisy is long lived too.

I know my opinions change over time. I still tell my nephews and nieces of how I had to walk miles to school, even in blizzards, so they should dress warm and either take the bus or walk. If it was good enough for me, its good enough for them. Of course I neglect to tell them that the real reason I walked, is that I normally beat the school bus both ways. And I walked miles to school, when I went to UW Milwaukee. It was quicker to walk than take the bus as I had to transfer twice each way.
