Without set theory, mathematicians would be chasing gossamer Laplacian deterministic rainbows in search of the final theory that would justify all mathematical thought. Fortunately Godel rescued them from that and proved by axiomatic sets that final proof of any system rests outside the system. The mathematicians could stop work on a complete and self explanatory edifice.
