<few pounds of meat and other consumable for one bar of gold?>

that does sound ridiculous until you think about the current situation in which pieces of paper with no intrinsic value are accepted as payment.

currently you can exchange gold into any currency you want, in any country, to buy things. I think eventually the local banks will start accepting gold for deposits etc.

Chase Bank just started handing out gold lunar coins for people opening new accounts. Except you have to deposit $600,000 to get a 1 oz. coin, LOL

"Where would one sell his gold and what he will receive in return if the system collapses and severe unrest spreads ? few pounds of meat and other consumable for one bar of gold?"

long before i needed the few pounds of meat and other consumables i'd have traded the bar of gold for a similar value of silver in coin or small bullion bars. then i'd negotiate the most i could get for the smallest amount of silver i held. of course if i'd have allowed myself to run out of water in the desert and was dying of thirst, i'd be willing to trade anything for water.

if bad times come, i think one will still have the time to negotiate 'somewhat' fair deals..
