The commander of U.S. forces in Baghdad confirmed violence had declined but warned of tough days ahead. He said "bloodthirsty" militants were lying low, trying to get a measure of the thousands of troops sweeping across the city.

My sister and I were just having a discussion about phrases/foreign languages and translations. She tutors a Hispanic in English and was trying to help her understand ..."There's no such thing as a free lunch." I suspect that the meaning is obvious to virtually all of us on the thread. Not so obvious to her student.

I wonder what happens to "He said "bloodthirsty" militants were lying low" when it gets translated into Arabic.
