For heterosexuals it was 5,208 males and adolescent males and 8,278 women for a total of 13,486.

just a hunch, but i believe the increased rate of transmission for women is coming from bi-sexual men

High-risk heterosexual contact* 5,208 8,278 13,486.

I don't trust these numbers. The people putting this together have an axe to grind, and are combining groups.

Ichy,

What was the Asterix about? Well if you read the article you cite - it is:

*Heterosexual contact with a person known to have, or to be at high risk for, HIV infection.

So this is not normal hetero activity - it is primarily government speak for sex with prostitutes.

Lindy is right & wrong - normal sexual activity only puts you at risk if your partner is HIV infected. However if a male and female engage in anal sex the likelihood of transmission is much higher (more chance of bleeding).
