Your info on coin shops in Germany is interesting... much the same in US. We have no VAT, but some jurisdictions impose sales tax and some do not.

Re Hommel -- IMHO his article is misleading at best. All sales of assets outside of retirement accounts are taxable... and any cash sales of $10k are reqd. to be reported to IRS... and patriot act National Security Letter could require dealer to report all transactions while being forbidden to tell you so.

I think that Canadian banks will accept Maple Leafs for deposit and change them into dollars at the current rate, but I live 1,000 miles from Canada and I have not tried it myself.
