some historical background ....

the Tamil Tigers in Srilanka (aka Tamil Eelam) have the desire to set up a nation of tamilians within the geographical limits of Srilanka, to counter what they percieve as a threat from the majority Sinhalese population in the country.

At one stage in the past, India sent troops as aid to Srilanka, to contain the unrest. That stopped when a srilankan tamilian lady assasinated the indian prime minister.

India has a state called Tamil Nadu (literaly translated as land of tamils) - my origins ethnically are from that state - but I do not agree with whats happening in srilanka.

I have heard unconfirmed stories that aid was not available to many srilankans at the time of the Asian Tsunami in 2004, due to the state of conflict within the country.

the situation there is not very different to what happend in Ireland with the IRA.
