I don't think anyone in Cheney's office is too fond of Armitage or his boss Powell right now.

Well, Armitage for sure.

But he couldn't possibly divine what the CIA was up to when it sent in that handwritten, "routine" request for investigation to the DOJ re: la femme Plame so he was probably told by his lawyers to keep his lips zipped. Funny how Fitzgerald got all directed to Cheney's office. Somehow. Hmm....

The CIA even sent out a bunch of ex-agents to make the rounds of the late night talk shows to bitch and moan about how horrible it was to "out" covert agents which, of course, is absolutely correct except for the fact that Plame was not covert and had not been for a long time.

Damn, they had me fooled there for a while. Made me forget that I had looked up the statute and the available evidence concluding that there was hardly any doubt that she was not covered by the 5 year period.

And if a no-name hack lawyer like me can figure that out as things were taking place, why couldn't Fitzgerald and, more important, the CIA?

There was definitely some CIA ax grinding going on.

And now, when the tea leaves show that it is unlikely that Libby will get convicted, what do we have? Let me list it the way I see it:

A tremendous waste of time and money.

A black eye for the Administration that started at Langley.

More grist for the mill of the members of the BDS cartel.

A political embarrassment.

Ahem. Who's got the Plamegate conspiracy theory here? Back where I came into this sadly typical Nadine excursion:

You are far too charitable. They were determined to undermine the Bush policy from day one. The whole "Plamegate" affair is only intelligible as a very successful and not so covert action against the Bush White in general and Dick Cheney in particular. Ditto the whole "anonymous" Scheuer book published during 2004, which meant it was written and approved by the CIA in 2003. That is unprecedented, to try to destroy a sitting President during a war. Cheney the victim. Quite a large looking glass you got to go through to come up with that one.

As far as Armitage goes, he was one of Novak's named sources, but Rove was the other one. Libby tried hard to do his part, taking time out from his busy wartime schedule to have a 2-hour tete-a-tete with the normally reliable conduit Judy Miller, but sadly, Miller screwed it up that time around.

My understanding was that Watergate was supposed to be a CIA conspiracy too. Deja vu all over again.
