But 5 1/2 years of sustained combat have transformed the venerable 113-acre institution into something else entirely -- a holding ground for physically and psychologically damaged outpatients. Almost 700 of them -- the majority soldiers, with some Marines -- have been released from hospital beds but still need treatment or are awaiting bureaucratic decisions before being discharged or returned to active duty.

This is what what you get when you try to fight the war on the cheap. This is what you get when you are in denial as to why you are fighting and not defining the objectives of the war.

If we are to fight, why not make the enemy fight all of us instead of just the soldiers that volunteered for the military.

This is a high price that these soldiers are paying when the architects of this war are incompetent.
