Let's substitute REGION for the COUNTRY in the sentence you objected to and see if it still makes sense: Palestine is a small and very poor REGION, about the size of your state of Vermont. Its Arab population is only about 1,200,000. Already we have had forced on us, against our will, some 600,000 Zionist Jews. We are threatened with many hundreds of thousands more. Gee, it still reads fine and the meaning is unchanged.
