No, it was kind of the opposite. We had the summer games in Los Angeles in 1932 at the height of the depression.

And the Chariots of Fire games, if that's what you're thinking of, was a great track and field revival for the Brits -- in Paris in '24 though.

What will be interesting is that generally a host nation goes all out with training budgets for 4-6 years prior to the games and has a giant team, and so you get small nations winning a bunch of gold medals and so on. This time with a huge nation on the rise hosting the games with athletes able to enjoy "home field advantage" it could be quite interesting. Unless the entire world unravels first from war or bird flu.
