I thought they had a choice, they had to improve the level of respect that Muslims held the US in. Because of the policies of the US, many Muslims have come to assume that any nation can get away with any insult to the US, and the US doesn't have the nerve to do anything about it. So they decided to take out Iraq, as the easier target, rather than Iran as the probably more difficult target. In reality they should have embargoed Russia and France, as the promoters of the conflict. As for assuming you supported Saddam, so many on SI do, it has become an easy mistake to make.
