"Someone brought up the point that there are 200 Chinese Jews in Shanghai. "

Not necessarily. All it would take was a female travelling Jewish moneylender that slept with a native and produced a daughter.

Voila! The genesis of the Chinese jews..

A great leading question that exemplifies how difficult it is to separate the elements of religion, ethnicity, and culture.

There were several large diaspora over the course of Jewish history which sent them into many areas where they inevitably intermarried or became part of a community. In addition, there were Jewish traders for over a thousand years who travelled between the ME and China. There was even an ancient city, Kaifeng, where they established a trading community that lasted until Mao's time. Given the rules that govern who is a Jew, I am sure there are Asian featured Jews who make that claim based on the matriarchal line, and not conversion.

The second section of Holy Land,Whose Land? is all about the history of not just the Jews, but the Christians and the Muslims. And it's a very complex one. I think you would enjoy it and it would help you (at least it did me) realize how complicated that whole issue is.
