In ancient times, Jewishness was by paternal lineage as you would expect, Jews being patrilineal and patrilocal, to use the anthropological terms. The rabbis changed the ruling sometime in the Dark Ages. Jewish women were getting raped too often, there had to be a ruling that regularized the status of their offspring.
