The reason that moderates are not heard is they are afraid to speak out. Why should they risk their necks to support a non Islamic force of resistance against the Islamic revolutionaries that are a direct threat to their way of life? In theory, they should stand up to the radical jihadis, but in reality it's hard to attack an armed militia of pyschotic killers that butcher your family in front of you if you piss them off. Or, they rape your daughter and defile her so that she is disgraced according to Islamic tradition.

There are pretty strong incentives to be a coward in a militia state like Iraq. We have done a poor job communicating our success in the peacekeeping role in Iraq. The Bush administration keeps selling this "war" against terrorists as one that we can defeat. In reality, the violence has to be countered by Iraqi security whose job it is to protect and serve the interests of the Iraqi people in a normal police function.

The murder is out of control, but I don't think we are at war in Iraq in any way, shape or form. I think the decision to add troops was symobolic of Bush's boneheaded inability to communicate a positive policy in Iraq. The troops are doing the right thing to support the Iraq security and eliminate the armed militias and terrorists. However, this is a security cleanup against people threatening the people and the government of Iraq.

Quite simply, we are fighting for the Iraqi people, not against them. We should stand up every day and remind the world that we are there to protect the Iraqi people from the same violence and terrorism we want to avoid. The war against terrorism is primarily designed to eliminate terrorism from hurting Muslims in Iraq. They have done quite a bit of damage already.
