"There were a few times I toyed with the idea of getting an AMD system with an NVidia chipset,"

It is all I ever use. I use Linux for the most part, and nVidia has released enough information for the chipsets that support is excellent. In addition, they offer a driver for the graphics cards.

I haven't checked since the acquisition, but ATI doesn't like supporting Linux. Which is ok, but they also don't like to release the information for drivers to be written. VIA, if anything, is worse.
