re: The Bush defenders might have a point that if one squints and waves their hands that the SotU address wasn't strictly a lie.

Some people point out that the precision of the language, that they have always gone right to the edge of an outright lie without passing, proves their intent to deceive. They must know the lie is a lie if they avoid it so assiduously. But then they all, as a team, leave the same false impression.

A great propaganda machine.

"It then found its way into his State of the Union where he proceeded to lie to the American public. "

Even worse. He continued to promoted the meme, even beyond the point where it was officially discredited. The Bush defenders might have a point that if one squints and waves their hands that the SotU address wasn't strictly a lie. Smirk might have been able to dodge the bullet by asserting that the only intelligence he paid attention to backed his claim. But that was swiftly discredited. So why did he keep asserting it as if it were true?I mean, other than he is a chronic and habitual lier?

Have you noticed they're disputing the weakest claim either of us has made about Bush's lies? Not that I am saying there is any doubt about Saddam not buying any yellow cake uran. but it has not been as thoroughly analyzed and explored as say WMDs in Iraq. Furthermore, the outing of Phlame has muddied the waters.

What's interesting thought is I believe they know that they are lies too but in their minds, they have justified them for some reason....probably for 'the common good'. I would love to review the process by which they come to that conclusion. I think that kind of thinking is something science should investigate and see if they can come up with a cure.
