"The "Law of Return" distinguishes between two categories of subjects: A Jew (One who has been born to a Jewish mother) A non-Jew, who is "a son/daughter or a grandson/granddaughter of a Jew, and the spouse thereof" who remains nonJewish, but nevertheless "is granted equal right of Aliya and absorption" - this is the paragraph 4A of the law. The repatriation visa granted to an applicant includes an indication of whether it was issued according to paragraph 4A or 4B. Until recently, the Israeli identity card had an indication of nationality, and anyone who made an alya as "4A", had NOT been marked as a Jew. Instead of that, there was an empty field.
