The troops don't have access to the columns of the NYT or the airwaves of the BBC. It is only now that they have access to the milblogs and can get their side of the story across at all. But relatively few people read the milblogs, or have soldiers in the family.

BBC reporting (they've been an egregious case) has been a real problem for the US and even more so for Israel. The double standard they use is just complete.

I remember one month during the intifada where the BBC spent hours reporting the trial of a Palestinian woman charged with aiding a suicide bomber. Very very critical of Israel.

During the same period, a Palestinian family whose members were accused by the local PLO of collaborating with Israel was being tortured and killed, one by one. Final count was something like 5 member dead or tortured, one hiding in Israel.

The BBC never reported it. Period.

During the same period, there was one day when a whole bunch of foreign reporters were hanging out at Arafat's compound in Ramallah, waiting for a press conference. A couple of police officers emerged with a prisoner. They marched the prisoner around a corner, stood him against a wall, and shot him. Questions from the reporters about whether the prisoner had had a trial were not answered. The cops were told to shoot him, they shot him. He was guilty of a sex crime, they said.

Nobody reported the incident, except Khalid abu Toameh of the Jpost. Can you even imagine if such a thing had happened in Israel with dozens of Euro reporters to witness it?
