I see no backup for that statement.

Develop new sources for electrical power? Yes.
Reduce pollutants that degrade biosystems and create health problems-- or worse, for humanity, wildlife and plants? Yes.

Nuclear Power? Certainly, if we can solve the political problem. There really is no scientific problem. It is a fact that nuclear waste is a toxic substance and we must develop ways to either recycle it safely or store it where it won't damage future generations.The science exists to do this. The political will, so far does not.
Many folks, of course reject all of this. They prefer to continue burning fossil fuels and wallowing in ever-increasing amounts of their own waste.
Motivation? Well of course there's a major profit motive. Those invested in legacy systems oppose innovation and change, if it serves their pocketbooks.
So let's have it. Give us a specific example of where environmentalists want "to turn off electrical power. "
