You'll have a pretty hard time making a case that affirmative action is the source of reduced crime. Lots of things happened in and since the 80s. The economy grew (as soon as the recession at the beginning of the 80s was over). The demographics became more favorable for lower crime. Large cities esp. New York tried out different police/anti-crime techniques. We locked more people up, keeping criminals off the street. Private citizens bought more guns to defend themselves, and states started liberalizing rules on concealed carry. In any case affirmative action benefits often fail to reach the people at the very bottom financially, who are more likely to be violent criminals. Most professional and/or habitual criminals didn't start their life of crime after failing to get in to a university or failing to get a managerial position because their was no affirmative action, or because it didn't help them enough to get the spot. Dude, check the statistics........crime started going back up in 2002 or 2003. Your should check the statistics. The violent crime rate has been lower under every one of Bush's years than it was in every one of Clinton's years. I don't know why your making Bush a big issue, this isn't really about Bush, but since you want to make Bush vs. Clinton and issue. Year / Violent Crime Rate 1993/747.1, 1994/713.6, 1995/684.5, 1996/636.6, 1997/611.0, 1998/567.6, 1999/523.0, 2000/506.5, 2001/504.5, 2002/494.4, 2003/475.8, 2004/463.2, 2005/469.2 Sure there was a slight increase from 2004 to 2005, but 2005 is lower than every year on the chart other than 2004. fbi.gov And the preliminary 1st half 2006 data show murder and rape and aggravated assault as down, along with "property crime", "Larceny-Theft", and motor vehicle theft, with "robbery" up.fbi.gov You're full of horse puckey. We have a high crime rate because there are too many guns. Then how come as the number of guns has skyrocketed in the last few three decades, crime has gone down? Sure there are other factors, and they may be the decisive factors. But arguing that crime is high because we have a lot of guns isn't a very well support assertion.
