House rejects bid to trim aid to Egypt By Vicki Allen
Thu Jun 8, 6:06 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. lawmakers who defended Egypt as an essential Mideast ally narrowly defeated on Thursday a bid in the House of Representatives to trim aid for Cairo to show displeasure at recent democratic setbacks.

The House voted 225-198 against an amendment to cut $100 million of economic support funds to Egypt, and shift half of that to refugee assistance in Darfur and half to fight the global AIDS epidemic.

The amendment was to a $21.3 billion foreign aid bill for the next fiscal year that the House was expected to pass on Friday or next week. The bill contains $1.7 billion in military and economic assistance for Egypt, the second biggest recipient of U.S. aid after Israel.
