There are commercial networks in the UK, and they do just fine:

mediauk.com

Most of the folks we met when we lived in the UK have a lot of pride about the BBC (and rightly so- they know how many US viewers love the BBC programs the US imports)

ITV is a competitor to BBC in the UK, but they dont have the global reach BBC has.

regulatory structure in UK - any one who owns a TV pays a tax for the TV every month - the money (or maybe some of it) ends up at the BBC.

Come on, a private enterprise network should be able to crush a government agency

The subsidies don't exactly create a level playing field, do they? Nor does the BBC have to be especially responsive to its viewers, because its income is guaranteed.
