In Germany a whole nation turned on the Jews, that's a lot more than a few fanatic religious nutters

While Germany had long standing traditions of anti-Semitism (ever read what Martin Luther wrote about them?), up to the end of WWI it was nothing the German Jews couldn't live with, and they were often very proud Germans.

But after WWI Germany was humiliated and looking for a scapegoat to offload its shame onto. Hitler rose to power by providing them one, and Nazi propaganda was pervasive and very effective. Also Nazi intimidation. Anyone who tried to help the Jews would share their fate if caught.
