As a matter of fact, the president of Shell just quoted that. Can't say I disagree. We aren't gonna suck it all up.

By diversifying energy resources, “People will switch demand to other energy sources” long before conventional oil runs out.
Amplifying this last point, Mr. Hofmeister mentioned an old saying that has been, I believe, first attributed to former Saudi Oil Minister Sheikh Zaki Yamani, that “The Stone Age did not end for lack of stones, and the Oil Age will not end for lack of oil.”

I see you are a fan of alternative history.

Try this version...if oil had been discovered it the 19th century by the Ottoman Empire, the Ottopeeples and the Germans win WW1. Brits, French don't get their trusteeships.
Peak oil would long be past. Climate change worsened by another 50 years of oil induced growth.
