"We be playing Rome Total War and going broke.
It's the Great Game. We don't play it well. Couch Potatoes. Too much Amerucan Idle.
or, as JimWillie sez, "checkers in a global chess game""

This is not a new phenomenal for the US. Think Poil Harbor. Think 9/11 and the failure of bush and clinton to understand the threat. We are either isolationist or fighting wars to end all wars while other folks play the "great game".

By the way its just a game. Nothing personal but you are expected to play chess and not checkers as you said. There are times when you clear the board and fight like a hell against a hitler but the only threat out there like that is al queda and their existance doesnt preclude the game for everyone else. And our concentration on the WOT led us to distractions so we didnt even sacrifice our game for anything worth getting back like osamas head on a stick. I hate guys who cant/wont admit error. Look Cheney in the eye and its the definition of smugness you see. Rummy =ed arrogance and bush utter confusion.
