They did and truth be told from stalin to krushchev there were many times many reasonable folks regretted not taking stronger action. But it worked out and we survived cuban MC but just barely. Russia 48 though may not be your best argument. Giving up nuclear monopoly against another country that is threatening you and yours is no slam dunk in any case/


The American generals wanted to take on the Soviet Union in 1946, when only we still had nukes. America had no stomach for more war.

Still, think how much better the history of the last 60 years would have been, esp. for Russia and Eastern Europe.
