That doesn't explain why we need to spend almost twice as much as THE REST OF THE WORLD PUT TOGETHER.

Why? Are we that much at risk? Hell, we are an ocean away from our nearest enemy.

<Hint: we don't spend on defense we spend on offense.>

1 - Many of the countries have a draft. They then pay very little (even by local standards) for military wages. Effectively they are seizing the military manpower, rather then paying for it. And the "seized assets" don't show up as an expenditure.

The truth is the hawks of this country have had their say and way for a long, long time. We have developed a whole culture that is devoted exclusively to defense and war. It permeates every level of our economy. Its hell bent on its survival. So it comes up with more and more elaborate and expensive toys with which to perpertuate its existence. All I can say is that the hawks better hope that the sleeping giant of America......its citizenry...has not been truly awakened by the Iraq war.
