Resigning a commission and retiring rather then accept an order you find unacceptable isn't a challenge to the civilian leadership of the military. Trying to stay in your position without following the order, would be.

You don't want a military that answers to themselves. You are coming from the premise that the civilian leadership is more benign. In most instances, I would agree with you but not in this instance. We have a president who is incapable of leading his people and a vice president who is strangely delusional. Not only are they antagonizing an entire world with their erratic and clumsy performance, but they are draining the US Treasury dry. Worse....it would seem the checks and balances system is reliant on the provision that all parties are reasonably rational.......which unfortunately is not the case here. I think it is for that reason the system is not working very well. By resigning, the military are giving Americans a heads up.........a heads up they need to hear. Having said that, I agree with Tim....I looked ahead at his post.........the military is not threatening to take over but rather retiring. That's a much less threatening situation.
