re: Its more than just a promise. The funds are my property. They have legal restrictions, but they belong to me.

As long as the fund company is able to meet it's "obligation". If you think the federal government shouldn't, then how can you hold a lousy company to account? It's trust, not law, that makes society work.

re: My car could be totaled, my cash could be stolen or destroyed. Our theories on stellar evolution could be wrong and the sun could go nova tomorrow. None of which means I don't own my property.

If I deposit money in trust for you, and the trust is in your name, and is irrevocable you could be said to own the money. If I tell you "don't worry John, I'll fund your retirement", then you don't own the funds even if you do trust me, even if I have the capability and intention of paying for your retirement.

You don't get it. In a lot of countries, people put their money under the mattress. They would no more trust a mutual fund company than your thoughts on "stellar evolution".

You believe you own that mutual fund money because you trust your government, not the company. I believe I will get SS benefits because I have trusted my government for over 40 years.

You lose that trust and you lose a lot more than a few $'s. It's the very basis of our society.
