Conversely, UMB’s development timeframe is at least one and possibly two years ahead of LTEs. We believe most CDMA carriers are evaluating both standards. Our service provider research colleagues here suggest that Verizon may be leaning toward LTE.

The CDMA value chain is an absolute mess. Qualcomm will need to get UMB to market substantially ahead of LTE AND demonstrate far better performance to give it much of a chance. Yesterday, LaForge stated that they are trying to get the UMB spec done in the next few months with initial rollouts in '09. We'll have to hear more about the performance to get an idea if that will be enough....right now, I have my doubts.

I think a more interesting decision will be the HSPA+ decision. Do the operators see value in an all-IP MIMO enabled network using channel bandwidths of 5MHz? It would provide them a network to combat the possible WiMAX players before the eventual deployment of LTE. I can imagine Cingular will go down this route but we havent heard much from the rest of the world.
