One can certainly over-romanticize Tibet. It was a medieval feudal state that still had a state oracle for deciding affairs.

However, the Chinese are colonizing it and Han-izing it just as brutally as the Spanish did to the Aztecs in Mexico. The Tibetans no more considered themselves Chinese than the Aztecs considered themselves Spanish. They have an extremely well defined identity centered around their Buddhist religion.
