Rightwing Myth #3: The GOP knows how to defend the USA. The truth is they are merely deeply tied-in with the arms manufacturing lobby and therefore promote huge wasteful spending on the military, but not on the soldiers, only on the big ticket items, some of which are useless. Much of this is money much better spent on health care and other people issues. Bush Sr. did know how to run a war, but Bush Jr. is the worst ever, and Nixon was terrible at it too. So running a war has nothing to do with party, it has to do with smarts, leadership and diplomatic brains and effort.
