Hey B,

It's very hard to describe SL. I understand your reaction based on what you read, and realizing that until I "lived" SL, it would have been incomprehensible to me.

I think the best way to explain why associating Edwards with porn because someone opened a virtual headquarters for him there, is like saying that anyone with a political web site on the internet is condoning Nambla. It is an enormously diverse metaverse (I think I recently saw that there are 4 million residents), a giant world made up of many forums, many neighborhoods, many lands, many countries.

Porn is there for the same reason it is on the internet. People offer it and there is an audience. It has nothing to do with what Linden Labs has created. They merely offer the technical tabula rasa for whatever anyone wants to create in the space with few restrictions.

For instance I own a tiny piece of land on the ocean with a little house and garden which I decorate seasonally. I have a grand piano which plays classical music. I belong to a book club led by a prof with a PhD in literature, and go to Scramble and Trivia Nights and win Linden dollars to buy my clothes. I have played basketball with my son who is far away in NY, and gone skydiving with my other son in LA. We meet at concerts. I even attended the Major League ALl-Star Game last year sitting in a virtual stadium, drinking a virtual beer and waving a virtual pennant. I have never once been in anything resembling a porn place!

People have created a replica of Hanover where Dartmouth is located, and a German village, and absolutely stunning gardens and forests, and there are amazing areas where people just create whatever they can imagine.

It is so much bigger than the impression you have of it and it's too bad that Kirsten Powers wrote to encourage that bias.
