Traditionally, Jews believed that they were all descended from the 12 tribes of Israel and were thus related. Some traced their descent from the tribe of Levi, the priestly tribe, and some specifically from Aaron the first high priest; these are the Cohenim. You still see Cohen as a Jewish name.

Recent scientific evidence investigation is starting to find genetic evidence to back these claims. They have found a common haplotype among men calling themselves Cohenim that seems to indicate a common ancestor at about the right period (about 3 thousand years ago). This haplotype is found in Jews from India, Africa and Europe as well as the Middle East. Other studies of genetic differences indicate that European Jews are more closely related to other Jews and to the Kurds and Arabs than to other European genetic groups.
