Let me state up front that I'm more in agreement with you than you think. Even more so since I went there on Thurs & signed up to see what SL like first hand.

While you made many salient points about SL, I still stand behind my POV regarding the Edwards Campaign as stated here:

And I totally disagree with this comment:

<< "but for right it's the wild west of technology" >>

Nothing that anyone here said or brought here via links gives credibility to such a notion. The technology isn't the problem most folks are concerned with. In fact, I personally think SL is pretty cool with a lot of potential.

<< "It may exist there but I have never been exposed to it (until I read it in the article), since I choose not to be." >>

Now that I've been there I have a much better understanding of your POV & mostly agree with that statement. One must choose to enter the non-PG (Mature & unsafe) sites at SL & you are notified about it before hand, unlike in the real world. You aren't, however, informed of what you may come across once you choose to enter. And since the creators of SL allow a fairly free hand in how folks design their various places, there is a fair amount of a wild west free for all going on.

Aye, there's the rub.

<< "Life is seamy; SL is seamier since it has no laws yet." >>

Actually, there are 6 laws (called Community Standards) that you must abide by on SL. They are actually pretty good for the concept of SL (see at link).

Again, the creators allow things to be pretty wide open & they aren't able to police the entire site. Where I have problems is with the previously stated issues (child porn, sex with children, rape, prostitution, ET AL.). I simply don't think that this is something that should be allowed anywhere. And I'm not saying that anything that's illegal in the real world should be outlawed in SL. But good God, there should be some limits IMVHO.
